NEW:  Easier application process

 

Entry Level:

How to get started in becoming a volunteer Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) with South Bay Fire Department:

​

  1. Complete the ACCUPLACER (reading/English) test, register through SPSCC (South Puget Sound Community College).  The test can be done remotely.  A passing score is 250. (There is a $35 test fee).

  2. Complete an ONLINE APPLICATION or pick up a paper copy at Station 81. 

  3. Submit the Application, ACCUPLACER test score, and a photocopy of your Driver’s license.

Lateral: (Those who already have a National Registry, Washington State EMT or IFSAC Firefighter certificate) can apply any time during the year using the steps above.​​

   Application Deadlines:

  • May 30th 

  • November 30 (Starting 2025)

We will schedule interviews in the week following the deadlines. 

Accepted recruits will be sponsored by our department to attend the EMT Academy through Thurston County Medic One.  The EMT Academy has two sessions a year. 

  • May application cycle will attend academy August-December

  • November application cycle will attend academy February-June

The class schedule for each session is: two evenings a week and about eight Saturdays.

We also have a Resident Responder Program

​​

  • Free rent for volunteers providing Firefighter & EMT services.

  • Live in a resident house owned by South Bay Fire Department. 

  • The resident house has a 6-person capacity and is located in the district.

  • Volunteers are responsible to pull 6 shifts a month.

  • Flexible scheduling.

  • Must be FF1 and EMT certified.
